Sketch of a faceted gem with ribbon swirls
Neo-trad · Colour · Flash
The drawing shows a faceted teardrop gem framed by curling ribbon and leaf-like flourishes, with a row of dotted beads along one side. The linework is blue pencil or pen, with soft hatched shading inside the gem and around the ribbons to give volume. The design is centred on a plain sheet of paper, with the sketch filling most of the frame.

The stone arrives in a matchbox, wrapped in tissue gone yellow at the folds, and you know before you unwrap it that the setting has failed. Someone's grandmother bought it in Hatton Garden in 1958, a teardrop of old cut glass that threw small rainbows across the ceiling tiles. The note tucked beneath it says only: for Ellen, who will need it on Saturday. Saturday is tomorrow.

You work at the bench until the radio gives up at ten. You file a length of white gold into a curl that Ellen's mother has sketched on the back of a receipt, and you set seed pearls along one side, one after another, like beads on a rosary. Your hands remember the pattern better than your head does. Each time the flame of the torch catches the metal, the sketch on the wall above you seems to lean closer, as if it wants to see how the ribbon turns out.
At midnight the groom's brother knocks on the shutter. He wants to know whether it will hold. You tell him the stone has outlasted three marriages already and will outlast a fourth, and he laughs, a little too loudly, and says that is exactly what worries him.
In the morning the light is thin and grey. You hook the pendant onto its ribbon, check the clasp twice, and hold it up against the window. The gem fills with blue sky, and for one moment every facet looks like a small, lit door.
