Sketch of scissors and a comb

Black and grey · Flash

A hand-drawn pencil sketch in blue shows a pair of open scissors with an ornate, scrolled handle set with a small diamond shape, crossing a comb with a circular emblem. The linework is loose and sketchy, with visible construction lines and smudged shading along the comb's teeth. The drawing sits on cream paper with plain, uncropped composition.

Inside, the chair was still bolted to the tiles, its red vinyl cracked into the shape of a dozen different bottoms. On the shelf above the basin sat the old scissors, the pair with the scrolled handles and the little blue stone set into the hinge. Fenn had bought them in 1979 from a man who swore they had once belonged to a Bristol tailor. They were never sharp enough for hair, he said, only sharp enough for the truth. Stanley used them for every cut anyway, and the customers came back for the talking more than the trim.

On her last Thursday she found a comb laid across the scissors, teeth up, with a round brass badge pressed into its spine. Someone had left it there deliberately. She turned it over and read the word scrawled beneath the badge in pencil: Keep. She did not know who had written it, or whether the handwriting was Stanley's or her own from years ago. She kept it, and locked the door behind her, and heard the blinds rattle once as she walked away.
