Three arrows fine line tattoo design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil drawing on paper shows three arrows at different angles, each with hatched, feathered fletching and a dotted trail behind it. A thin curved arc and a small circle sit among the arrows, and a cross-shaped arrow mark appears at the top left. The linework is fine and uniform, with light shading on the fletching, and the composition is set diagonally across the page.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The bowstring had gone slack in the damp, and Maud Penhallow was not going to let her father see her fret over it. She sat on the hay bale behind the Calder Lane butts with three shafts laid across her knees, testing each feather with her thumb. The grey goose fletching had been plucked from a single bird, and the hatching on the vanes was her own work, done with a nib pen in the back room of the chandler's while the kettle went cold. Her father called it fussy. The judges at Tanner's Field had called it something else last spring, and she had carried the ribbon home in her coat pocket like a stone.

The lantern at the gate guttered, and a lad came running up the lane with word that the wind had shifted to the west. Maud stood, lifted the longest arrow, and found that her hand was steady after all. She nocked it, drew, and let the dotted trail of chalk she had sprinkled along the grass guide her eye toward the far ring. The shot went wide of the gold but true to the line she had planned, skimming past the small iron hoop hung from the oak, the one her grandmother had insisted was for luck and nobody else could hit.
When she walked out to retrieve the shafts, the arrow had split the hoop clean through and lodged in the bark above it. Her father stood by the gate with his hat in his hands and said nothing for a long while. Then he took the second arrow from her quiver, looked at its feathers, and handed it back. "Your mother fletched like that," he said, and went home without another word.
