Skull and piston on a limb

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic skull sits at the centre of the design, with a piston and fragments of metal breaking away from the top of the cranium. Smooth greyscale shading builds up highlights on the bone and deep shadows in the eye sockets and teeth. Dark drips run down from the jaw, and the design is framed against bare skin with no other elements.

Hold the lamp steady, lad, my hands have not been reliable since the winter. That piston came out of a brown estate with no badge left on it, the summer Cyril Rudd rebored his own block behind the chapel hall and swore the thing was sound. It wasn't. On the bypass at forty miles an hour the rod let go, and the piston took the cylinder head off like a lid off a tin.

Cyril walked away with a split lip and a face full of oil. The car was a write-off, but the piston he kept. He polished it on his trouser leg until the crown shone and carried it into the garage on Ferry Street like a trophy. He told everyone it was the only honest thing he had ever made. Nobody argued, because nobody wanted to be the one to tell him the metal had been tired long before he was.

Years later, at the school reunion in the sports hall, Cyril was still at it, pointing at the trophy cabinet and telling anyone who would stand still about the night the engine gave up. The sugar biscuits had gone soft in their paper cups. Somebody's daughter asked whether it hurt. Cyril looked at his own knuckles, scarred white, and said the bang was the easy part. It was the quiet afterwards that stayed.

I set the piston down on the bench between us, greasy, dented, still warm from the lamp. You don't keep a thing like this to remember the crash, I said. You keep it so you remember the sound it made before it decided to be free. Then I switched off the lamp and let the shop go dark.
