Skull and flowers flash drawing

Traditional · Mixed · Flash

A pencil drawing of a skull with shaded eye sockets and nose, set within a symmetrical arrangement of three flowers and several leaves. The bold red-orange outlines and dark brown pencil shading give the design a traditional flash look, with small red dots scattered around the motif. A black pencil lies diagonally across the top right of the sheet, and the drawing fills most of the square frame.

The lift had been broken since Tuesday, so Mo carried the sketchbook up eleven flights with her elbow clamped round it like a loaf. Her uncle Dez was waiting on the landing with the door propped open by a tin of paint, pretending he hadn't been watching the stairwell for twenty minutes.

He had one request. A skull, he said, but not a grinning one. Something that looked like it had been awake all night and didn't mind. Mo took the pencil from behind her ear, the black one with the gold band she'd nicked from the bookies' counter, and sat on the arm of the sofa while the telly muttered to itself.

She drew the skull first, the way her nan had taught her: bone left pale, the shadow pressed in with a brown pencil until the eye sockets were holes you could fall into. Then the flowers, three of them, each petal outlined in the hot orange red the kids on the estate used for chalk on the car park. Leaves came off them like open hands. The dots went in last, a few on the paper and one on her thumb.

Dez held it up to the window at the end. The light off the car park came through the orange lines and made them glow. That'll do, he said, which from him was a sonnet. She left the sketch on the sill, weighted with the pencil, and went down eleven flights in the dark, counting the landings out loud so she wouldn't miss one.
