A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bottle came in on the spring tide the morning after Dora cut the roses back, three of them still in full bloom against the cliff wall, their petals browning at the edges. Gulls had been pecking at the weed line for an hour before I saw the green glass, the cork bleached white as bone, and the ribbon tied round the scroll inside, faded to the colour of weak tea.

I carried it up the cliff path in my coat pocket because I did not trust my hands with it. Dora was at the kitchen table with her spectacles pushed up on her forehead, sorting seed packets into shoeboxes the way she had every February for thirty years. She didn't look up. "Open it, then," she said, "before the sea changes its mind."

The paper was thick, the sort the post office stopped selling before the war. The handwriting was Mam's. I knew it at once, though she had been gone since the winter the boats stopped. She wrote that the roses on the wall were not to be cut, that she had tied the bow herself, and that whoever untied it must read the list folded beneath. The list was names, every person who had ever sat on the bench above the cove, and beside each name a flower. Mine had none. Dora's had a rose, full and open.

Dora read it twice, took the secateurs from the drawer, and went out without her coat. By supper there was a fourth rose on the wall, pale yellow, planted in the gap where the old hedge had been, and the bottle stood on the windowsill with its cork pushed back in.
