Skull and rose on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic-shaded human skull sits inside a rose outline, with a ribbon bow and two leaves below and a second rose shape behind it. The skull is rendered in soft grey tones with dark eye and nasal cavities and bold black outlines around the rose petals and leaves. Two close-up photographs show the same tattoo from slightly different angles, with the skin tone and background kept neutral.

The rose was Mabel's idea. For thirty years she had painted one on the canvas flap of the Pemberton tent, red as a fire engine, and when the circus folded in Hull that October she wanted something darker to close the book. So we tied a black ribbon round its stem and set a skull inside the petals, grinning out at the empty benches the way old Sid used to grin at the ringmaster when the takings came up short.

The skull lived in a hatbox under the costume wagon, a prop from the magic act that Ferris swore had once belonged to a surgeon in Leeds. Nobody asked how he came by it. On the last Saturday we set it on a stool in the middle of the sawdust and lit it with one paraffin lamp, so the eye sockets swallowed the light and the teeth caught it like a row of tiny moons. Eleven people had bought tickets. A boy in a grey school jumper waved at it the whole time.
When the lamp guttered, Mabel crouched beside the skull and tugged the bow straight, the way she had fixed a thousand costumes before a show. She told me the trick was never the flame or the trapeze. It was knowing when the room had finished being sad and could be sent home. Then she stood, shook out her skirt, and bowed low to the skull, and the boy in the grey jumper clapped until his mother pulled him out into the dark.
