Skull key and padlock heart on calves
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
The left photo shows a shaded grey skull set into an ornate key, with leaves and a ribbon wrapping the shaft, which carries the word LOVE in block letters. The right photo shows a padlock shaped like a heart, with a sugar skull and a plain skull within it, a shaded rose above and scrollwork around the edges. Both designs use bold black outlines, grey shading and red accents, and both sit on the lower leg.

Nobody had opened the heart-shaped padlock on the Carrow Street footbridge in eleven years, so when Dora Pike knelt on the wet boards with her father's ring of keys, the queue outside the bakery stopped to watch. Rain ran off the iron railings. The lock's two halves were sugar-skull faces, one grinning, one bare, and a rose beneath the scrollwork had rusted to pink.

Walter Pike had fitted locks in this town for forty years and never once talked about the bridge. Dora found the docket in his tool drawer: one key, cut to order in 1987, its bow worked into a skull and a ribbon running down the shaft spelling LOVE in block capitals. It had never been collected. The shop had kept it in a brown envelope marked PIKE, AWKWARD, and it had sat in her coat pocket for two counties, knocking against her hip like a question.
She tried the key anyway. It went in stiff, the ribbon catching on the tumbler, and the shackle lifted with a sound like a cough. A few people clapped, then thought better of it. Inside the heart's hollow lay a folded sheet of paper gone soft at the edges, and in her father's square hand it said only: THIS ONE WAS ALWAYS YOURS TO OPEN. She read it twice, then left the padlock hanging open on the railing and walked on towards the bakery, the key warm in her fist.
