Skull drinking from a whiskey bottle on forearm
Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A greyscale skull with detailed bone shading sits on the left, tilting back as a skeletal hand raises an amber-coloured bottle to its mouth. The bottle has a black label with white lettering, and the background is shaded in dark tones that make the highlights on the bone and glass stand out. The composition runs across the forearm with the skull at the edge of the frame and the bottle extending to the right.

Death came to the mill at Corrow the week after the harvest bells, and he came in no hurry, because nobody in that valley had ever been able to hurry him. He sat down on an upturned sack by the hearth and asked for something to wet his jaw.

Osric Venn had only the one bottle, kept behind the flour bin for his wife's brother's funeral, and it was the colour of late sun through a cracked window. He poured it into a cup with a chip in the rim. The skeleton took the cup in fingers as thin as wheat stalks and tipped it to the place where a mouth should have been. The drink went down, or somewhere near it, and the bones of his face seemed pleased.
Osric had heard the stories. Anyone who bargained with Death lost, and the bargains always began with a drink. So he waited for the price. Death only sighed, turned the bottle in the lamplight to read the faded black paper on its side, and asked for another.
Three cups later Death stood, tucked the bottle under his arm, and said the valley would have no hard winter that year. Then he said Osric's own name was written in his book in ink that did not fade, and walked out into the frost. Osric found the bottle on the step the next morning, empty and still faintly warm, and from then on he kept the good drink on the table where anyone could see it.
