Skull-faced woman with bones on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A half-skeletal woman with an updo and a beaded pearl headband is shown in profile, with a bone-like shape across her chest and a bare branching crack pattern near the wrist. The design uses bold black outlines with grey shading on the hair, skull and bones. The tattoo fills most of the forearm, which is photographed from above against a carpet and a light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the pearls twice before the shop bell rang, and she counted them a third time when the man in the wet overcoat set a velvet box on the counter and told her it had belonged to his late wife. The clasp was bent. Someone had tried to force it. Under the lamp each pearl held a small grey moon of reflection, and she could not shake the feeling that the box smelled of cold earth.

"She wore them to the Palais every Friday," he said. "Said they were the only honest thing she owned."

Nell told him the clasp could be mended by Thursday. He thanked her and did not leave. He stood looking at the window, where rain ran down in lines and the streetlamp on Bridge Street broke into a thousand branching threads on the glass, like frost or a crack spreading through ice. "She used to say you could hear the city splitting," he said. "Late, when the trams stopped."

After he went, Nell sat with the box open and the lamp humming. She fitted the bent clasp into the bench vice, eased it true with flat-nosed pliers, and found a name scratched inside the lid in a looping hand: Ada. Beneath it someone had drawn a small crowned skull with a loop of pearls across its brow. Nell put the strand back in its velvet and locked up at midnight. Walking home past the chip shop, she caught her reflection in the dark glass and for a moment was sure the pearls at her temples were not hers. She didn't stop. She only pulled her collar higher and walked faster, listening for the splitting.
