Mandala flowers on upper arm
Dotwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large mandala-style floral design covers the shoulder and upper arm, with a bloom at the top and a cluster of layered flowers and ornamental petals running down towards the elbow. The linework is fine and detailed, with much of the shading built from dense dots and stipple. The image is entirely black and grey, and the photograph shows the arm against a grey top and a studio setting.

You are the one who stays at the hut on Cold Ash Pass when the last mule train turns back, and by October the only company is the wind and the wool dealer's boy, who brings flour on Thursdays. Your hands are never idle. With a bone awl and a pot of soot ground into goat fat, you prick small dots into the lintel above the door, one after another, the way your grandmother taught you, until the stone holds a flower the size of a cartwheel.

The boy asks why the petals crowd so tightly near the hinge side. You tell him the wind comes through there and the dots keep it honest, and he believes you because you say it plainly. The truth is that the crowding marks the place where your mother stopped. She walked down to the valley the spring she fell ill, and she never climbed back up. You have added a dot to her petals every day since, so the bloom keeps growing towards the road she took.
Each winter the drifts climb higher and bury the rings you have carved, layer over layer, until the flower looks like something seen through frosted glass. In March the thaw uncovers it again, wet and dark and shining. You carry the empty flour sack out to the gate and look down the switchbacks, counting the new dots the rain has pulled into the stone overnight, and you add one more to the nearest petal before the boy's mule bell sounds below.
