Skull in helmet and goggles with cigarette
Mixed · Flash
A cartoon skull wears a vintage open-face helmet and aviator-style goggles, with red-rimmed eyeballs and a long, wild beard. A lit cigarette with smoke rising from it sits between the teeth. The linework is bold and dark with smooth grey shading on the skull and helmet, and small red highlights on the eyes, mouth and cigarette tip, all set on a plain white background.

Mrs Pelham has never allowed smoking in the front room of Seacrest, so when I found Mr Vosper's motorbike parked across the hall carpet with its engine still ticking, I knew he'd been at the back step again. He came every October with the same brown leather bag and the same goggles pushed up on a helmet that looked older than the pier. Nobody knew where he rode from. He paid three weeks in advance and never once asked for a sea view.

On the fourth night the wind got up off Morecambe and rattled every sash in the building. I took him a cup of tea at the top of the stairs and found him sitting on the landing with his goggles down, a cigarette burning between his teeth and a grey thread of smoke climbing past the bulb. "Lamp's gone in the back bedroom," he said, as if that explained the dark. "Mind the step, love. It's a long way down for a man of my years."
I didn't ask about the bag. I asked whether he'd ridden the coast road in the storm, and he laughed so hard his beard shook. Then he told me about the winter of 1947, when he carried a sealed envelope from Barrow to a lighthouse keeper whose wife had just died. The road had swallowed him halfway and spat him out at dawn, and the envelope was still dry.
When I went up the next morning his room was empty and the bed was made tight as a drum. On the windowsill lay a single cigarette, unlit, and beside it a pair of goggles with the lenses polished bright. Mrs Pelham said the rent had been paid to the end of the month. I still haven't decided whether to believe her.
