Skull Kid character on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bold full-colour tattoo of a masked figure resembling Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, with a wide-eyed horned mask, red and orange tattered cloak and a pointed black hat. Heavy black outlines and sweeping black shapes frame the figure, with teal splatter shading behind it. The design wraps around the forearm and is shown in a close, slightly angled photo against a yellow-green surface and dark clothing.

Dear Ines,

The crate came up from the drowned quarter on Tuesday, wrapped in a bin liner and a child's school jumper, and inside it was the mask you asked me to stop mentioning. You were right that it shouldn't be in the vault. Its eyes are still gold under the grime, and one horn has snapped at the tip, but the grin is the same one we saw in the survey photographs from the old flood line, the one that made the surveyor refuse to work after dark.

Here is what the cataloguing clerk swears happened. When she lifted the mask out, the paper labels on the other crates curled in the damp and all turned to face the door. Nobody touched them. She says the room smelt of rain on hot tin, and that the teal stain on her sleeve, which she took for ink, went back and forth between her wrist and the shelf like something climbing. I told her the building has bad seals. She didn't laugh.

I've decided we will not display it. I've also decided we will not destroy it, because the last time someone tried, the council sent a man with a van and the van came back empty. So I've signed it out to the back store under my own name, with a note in the margin: returned to the cloak, not to the tide. Come and see it before the winter shift starts. Bring the good torch. And if you find the cloak has moved, don't mention it to Dev.

Yours in dread, Maud
