Day of the Dead sugar skull full sleeve
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman wearing a black vest top shows a full sleeve tattoo running from the upper arm down to the forearm. The central figure is a woman with a sugar skull face, dark hair and red and orange roses, surrounded by smaller skulls, a lantern, a church with candles and a cross. The work uses smooth, bold shading and vivid colour in red, orange, teal and purple against a soft, dark background.

Sit nearer, the fire wants feeding and I want you where I can see your faces. Up in the village of Valdecanas, past the last of the pines, they make their sugar skulls the week before the dead come home. Every family keeps a painted lantern on the sill, and the old women keep one lamp burning for the stranger nobody remembers.

There was a seamstress there called Rosa Imelda, who kept a bed of red and orange marigolds and roses beneath her window and sold them to anyone who came up the lane carrying a grief. She painted her own face white and gold for the festival and wore the same red dress every year, so the children called her the Candle. Her husband had walked into the forest the autumn before and not walked out, and the priest said that was the forest's business, not hers.
On the last night, Rosa climbed the hill to the little church, where candles burn all night in the nave, and found a lantern already lit on the altar, carved with a grinning skull. Beside it sat a boot caked in forest mud. She did not weep. She poured a cup of wine, set a marigold in the candle wax, and told the empty pews what the dead were owed: a supper, a song, and a door left open.
At dawn the forest gave back a man with leaves in his hair, looking puzzled and cold, and the whole village watched Rosa laugh for the first time in a year. The priest said nothing, and nobody thought to ask the forest what it wanted in return.
