Skull with clockwork gears and Roman numerals
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A skull with a mechanical section made of cogs, gears and exposed plates is shown, set beneath large Roman numerals and above swirling smoke. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with strong highlights and deep shadows that give the skull and metal parts a three-dimensional look. The composition fills the frame vertically, with the numerals across the top, the skull centred and the smoke trailing across the lower part of the arm.

Nobody had wound the clock in the assembly hall of St Aidan's since 1987, so at the reunion it still said twenty to nine, and Gerald kept checking it against his phone like a man checking a verdict. Forty years had made the room smaller. The same parquet was scuffed in the same arcs, and the Roman numerals painted in gold on the dial still hung above the stage where the headmaster used to stand.

Ruth found him by the trestle table with the raffle tickets. "You still owe me a Tuesday," she said. When they were fifteen they had broken into the clock tower to take the escapement apart, and Gerald had promised to put it back together before the bell struck the hour. He never had. The school had been converted into flats in 2003, and the developers had sold the tower's brass to a dealer in Leeds, but nobody had told the clock that it was finished.
He pulled a small toothed wheel from his coat pocket and laid it on the tablecloth between the sausage rolls. It was still bright, still warm from his palm. "I kept one," he said. "I kept the one that matters." Ruth looked at the wheel, then at the dial, where the minute hand had begun, very slowly, to tremble.
They went up the back stairs together, past the rope that no longer had a bell at the end of it. Gerald fitted the wheel into the gap where the great gear should have been, and the hall below gave a single long groan as the old works remembered their purpose. The bell struck nine. Downstairs, the room fell silent, and Ruth saw that the numerals were the only things in St Aidan's still in the right order.
