Unicorn skull over crossed bones

Black and grey · Flash

A bold white silhouette of a unicorn skull with a spiral horn, open jaws and a curved line of neck vertebrae, set above a pair of crossed bones. The shapes are flat solid white with simple cut-out details and no shading, on a dark charcoal background. The composition is centred and symmetrical in a tall format, with the skull at the top and the crossed bones below.

The tide had turned by the time Mags Halloran dragged the last crate up the slip, and the gulls over Bristol docks had gone quiet in the rigging. I stood at the foot of the quay with a lantern that smoked more than it shone, waiting for the Silver Hind's bosun to stop arguing about his cut.

The figurehead had come off the bow that same spring. Old Crane carved it from a ship's timber that washed up at Clevedon, a beast with a spiralled horn and a mouth full of teeth, and the crew argued for a month over whether it was a horse or a dragon. Crane settled it by saying a unicorn was only a horse that had been to sea and seen what the sea keeps. He painted the skull white and nailed crossed bones beneath it on the mainmast, because a ship with a dead beast at her prow needed a flag worth fearing.

That night the Customs cutter came in without its lamps. We heard the oars before we saw it, the slow knock of wood on wood, and Mags swore and pushed the purse into my hand. 'Pay them in copper,' she said. 'Gold makes men honest, and honest men ask questions.'

I paid them in copper. The lieutenant counted it twice, touched his hat to the painted skull, and rowed off whistling. At first light the Hind slipped her moorings without a word from anyone. Only when we cleared the Holms did I find Mags's note tucked behind the lantern hook. The horn was real silver, she had written, and the skull was the only honest thing aboard.
