Skyline line art with lettering on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the forearm shows a continuous line drawing of a skyline, with tall towers on the left, a domed building on the right and an arched bridge across the middle. A line of capitalised text reading Cerca Dio in tutte le cose sits along the base of the design. The image is in black ink only, with fine outlines and sparse solid fill on the buildings, and the design fills the width of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The wedding was in a function room above a bingo hall in Hull, and the cake had already slid a little to one side when my brother stood up to speak. He had no notes. He had a paper napkin folded into quarters, soft at the creases, and he set it between the gravy boat and the candles and smoothed it flat with the side of his hand.

On it was a biro drawing: two tall towers, a dome like an upturned bowl, a bridge of three arches, and low houses at the far left sloping toward the edge of the paper. Beneath, in careful capitals, our father had written the words he used to say over the kitchen sink: CERCA DIO IN TUTTE LE COSE. Seek God in all things.
Dario told the room that Dad had drawn it in 1961 on the back of a shipping form, a stonemason who went to Mass only when a job demanded it. He said the cathedral was the only building Dad ever went quiet in front of. The bride laughed at that, and then so did everyone else, and then nobody did, because Dario had stopped reading and was looking at the napkin.
Dad's last request had been that the drawing go somewhere people would see it every day. Dario unfolded it and showed the groom the pencil line under the words, unfinished, running on past the paper's edge. "Keep going," he said. I still have the napkin. The line is still there, and I have never once finished it.
