City skyline outline on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A single unbroken black outline traces a city skyline with tall towers, a spire and stepped rooftops. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, so the tattoo reads as a clean silhouette against the skin. The skyline runs horizontally across the side of the ribs, with dark fabric at the top of the frame and a pale wall at the right.

Old Mrs Pryce said the line had to be unbroken or the town would not hold its shape, so she kept the pen on the paper from the first chimney to the last. Her grandson, Owen, watched her hand move across the back of a seed catalogue at the kitchen table in Llanwrin, the spire of St Cadoc's coming up out of the page like a bent finger.

The town had been drawn that way since the spring of 1953, when the mill owner's wife asked for a picture of Llanwrin to hang over the piano before they sold the house and moved to Birmingham. Nobody in the valley had ever seen a city, so the picture had to be made from memory. Mrs Pryce remembered the water tower, the bakery's stepped gable, the three-storey Co-op, and the spire, which she said was taller than it had any right to be.
Owen asked why she didn't lift the pen to rest her wrist. She said a lifted pen was a lie, a place where the town stopped and something else began. Only when she reached the far end, the slope above the railway where the last cottage leaned, did she set the pen down, and the line stayed closed.
Years later Owen found the drawing folded in a hymnbook. The line ran from the left edge to the right without a single gap, and in the corner, in pencil, she had written: nobody left the picture until it was finished.
