City skyline silhouette across a back

Blackwork · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a city skyline runs horizontally across the upper back, showing a church spire, a Ferris wheel, a tall tower and several low buildings with arched colonnades. The shapes are filled with flat black ink with no shading, and the edges are crisp against the skin. The person is photographed from behind against a dark backdrop, so the tattoo fills the centre of the frame.

Marta had cut the skyline eleven times that spring and the wheel still would not sit right. Her father had taught her with a craft knife on black card: start at the river, work outward, never lift the blade for a spoke. The spire went first, then the squat tower with its needle, then the arcade of the old customs hall, which she always cut in one unbroken run so that customers could hold the card to the window and count the arches.

The commission came from a man leaving the city for the coast in June, who wanted the whole view across his back, every roof of it, in ink. He sent a photograph of the real thing taken from the embankment at dusk. Marta studied it under the lamp for a week, then tried the wheel again, and again the spokes bunched near the hub like wet hair.

On the Thursday before the deadline she sat with the card flat under her palm and cut the last hundred spokes in one go, the knife as steady as her father's had been. At the thirty-first spoke it slipped and nicked the rim. She nearly started again. Instead she left the nick and carried on, and when she held the finished piece against the window, the notch let a single point of light fall through onto the floor, a small bright star where the wheel turned.
