Black fine line tattoo of a stylised skyline silhouette with a small craft above it, circled by a thin band around the forearm.

Skyline silhouette with thin band on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is a solid black silhouette resembling a skyline or ship's hull with radiating white stripes, with a small object above it. A thin black line runs diagonally from the left and wraps around the arm as a band. The ink is all black, shown on pale skin with a dark lace sleeve at the top of the frame and an outdoor background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ray has been dancing with the same woman since the last waltz finished, and you watch from the rail by the cloakroom while the band takes a breath. Through the tall windows the liner Corinthia sits out past the breakwater, every porthole lit, her funnel dark against a sky going the colour of weak tea. Nobody in the hall is looking at her except you.

You were meant to be aboard her. Your mother wrote the cabin booking on the back of a Woolworths receipt, and you carried the ticket folded in your coat pocket for three weeks before you walked it back to the purser's office with a note saying you would follow on later. Later has taken eleven years. The band starts something slow, the floor fills, and you find you can count the bars of light the liner lays across the black water without losing your place.

Ray crosses the parquet with his hands in his pockets, the way he crossed the yard at the depot when he was trying not to look nervous. 'You're not going to stand there all night,' he says, and he holds out a hand with the cloakroom ticket still looped round two fingers, as if it were a dance card.

The horn goes out over the bay, long and low, and the whole hall tips its head towards the windows. You do not turn to look. You take his hand and let him lead you out onto the floor, and somewhere past the breakwater the Corinthia slips her moorings and heads for open water without you, which is only fair, because you have a waltz to finish.
