Sleepy owl with flowers and stars
Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo
A sleepy owl with closed eyes and teal wing feathers sits at the centre of the design, its chest filled with a green diamond pattern dotted with red. Pink flowers with orange centres and green leaves surround it, with orange stars above and below. Bold black outlines and flat, solid fills in a bright palette are shown against a close, straight-on view of the skin.

The board stayed dark until ten past two, when a light came on for number nine, Mill Lane. I plugged in with my usual "Number, please?" A man's voice, thick and careful, asked for the doctor. His daughter was burning up, he said, and the bridge was closed for flood. I sent the call on to Dr Acland and sat with my hands resting on the cords, listening to the rain push at the window glass and the clock tick on the wall.
Somewhere in that hush my eyes slipped shut. I had only meant to rest them. When I opened them again the board was lit like a field of small green stars, every lamp burning for somebody who needed a voice at the other end. The owl was still asleep on its shelf, the way I had been, and I thought how little a bird like that has to do to keep watch. Then I reached for the next plug and said, "Number, please?" to the dark.
