Owl and blossom branch on a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large owl with wide orange-rimmed eyes and a pale face sits on a branch inside a teal circle. Pink blossoms and green leaves frame the design on the left and right, and the owl's feathers are shaded in orange, yellow and green. Bold dark outlines and bright, saturated colour are used throughout, with the design fitting neatly into the curve of the shoulder.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you, where the fire can reach your boots. No, the castle was never a king's castle, whatever the carved stones pretend. It was a wool merchant's house, and he had a daughter called Maud who could not sleep for the owl in the chapel rafters. Every night it sat there with its great orange eyes open, watching the cold hall below, and every night Maud wrote to the Bishop asking him to send a man with a ladder and a sack.

The Bishop wrote back one line. An owl is only as wise as the people who listen to it. Maud laughed at that and tore the letter into birds, and then she lay awake to prove him wrong. She saw the owl turn its pale face toward the dark stairwell whenever a rat moved, and she saw it wait, patient as a priest, until the rat was sure of its own safety. She understood then that the owl was not watching her at all. It was watching the hall, the way a good steward watches a sleeping house.

The cherry trees her grandmother planted in the inner ward had gone wild by then. When they flowered that spring, the wind carried their petals up through the broken roof, and they settled on the owl's head and shoulders like a crown somebody had forgotten to collect. Maud climbed the ladder herself that morning, though no man had sent her, and she found the owl dozing with blossom caught in its feathers.

She never asked the Bishop for anything again. She sat up with the owl on the nights the wind blew cold, and she learned that some watchers are only keeping a house safe for the people sleeping in it.
