Colour tattoo of a sketched film camera surrounded by yellow daisies and barbed wire on the upper thigh.

Camera and daisies with barbed wire

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A sketched film camera sits at the centre of the design, with its lens and top plate shaded in black and grey. Yellow daisies with dark centres surround the camera, and loose barbed wire wraps around the outside. The outlines are sketchy and loose, and the yellow fills are soft and washed over the petals.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wire ran along the bottom of Dad's allotment like a line someone had drawn and then thought better of, rusted and looped, with a dozen daisies pushing up through the gaps on the far side. You were nine the summer you climbed it to reach them, and you came away with a scratch on your shin and a fistful of stalks that wilted before you got home. Dad didn't shout. He took the camera down from its hook in the shed and handed it to you, the leatherette worn pale where his thumb always went.

Nobody else was allowed to touch that camera. You learned the film advance by feel, counting the clicks, shooting the daisies from low down so the lens seemed to fill with them. You got through thirty-six frames in a week, half of them blurred by your own breathing, and most of the rest were the same yellow heads nodding over the wire. Mum said you were wasting good film. Dad said nothing. He only watched you from the path with his hands in his coat pockets, the way he watched weather coming.

The roll went to the chemist on the high street, and the envelope came back with the prints in a stack that smelled faintly of vinegar. Near the end was one frame you didn't remember taking, shot from the path with the camera held at chest height. The daisies were a smear of gold, and the wire stood sharp across the middle. Beyond the gate, a man in a flat cap was looking up the rows, and you knew the shoulders before you knew anything else. You pinned that print above the kitchen sink, where the morning light catches the wire, and you still look at it while the kettle boils.
