Twin-lens reflex camera on the upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a large twin-lens reflex camera at the centre, with a visible brand name on its body, surrounded by smaller cameras, gears and loose cogs. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth and detailed on the lenses and camera body, with some lighter grey stippling and splatter across the lower area. The composition wraps around the upper arm, and the photograph is taken against a shelved background.

Dear Tomasz, the fair pitched on the common again, two days late because the lorry lost a wheel outside Doncaster. Dad's old camera is still in the van. I took it out this morning, the one with two lenses stacked like eyes and the waist-level viewfinder that shows the world upside down until you learn to read it.

Mrs Okonedo's boy wanted his picture taken beside the big wheel. I told him to stand still and look down into the hood, not at me. He kept lifting his head, so the flash went off on the grass and he laughed at the white smoke of it. The flash unit has been dead since March, so I used the daylight instead, which Dad always said was the honest way.

Last night I went through the tin of loose cogs he kept under the bench, the ones he bought off scrap men for pennies. I counted them. Forty-one. He once told me each one was a day the fair had kept moving. I don't know if that's true, but I laid them out on the van step in rows and photographed them, which I suppose is what he would have done.

The film is in the envelope with this letter. Don't open it until you're home. I want you to see the wheels before anyone tells you what they mean.
