Small 9¾ symbol on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of the numerals 9 and ¾ sits on the inner wrist, shown in a close-up photograph of a light-skinned arm resting against dark fabric. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink reads as a dark purplish grey. The composition places the small design in the centre of the frame, with the hand and pink nail polish visible at the bottom edge.

The messenger had walked the river road twice, counting posts, and twice the count had gone from nine to ten with nothing between. 'You passed it,' the ferrywoman said from her barge, not looking up from her net. 'Everyone passes it the first time. Go back to the ninth post and take one step more.'

Her grandmother had told her the kingdom was counted out in tens, but the old king could not abide a gap that would not close, so he had a half-step cut into the road between nine and ten. It was for things too heavy for either number: unfinished vows, debts nobody would collect, the names of children who had gone quiet. The stones there were worn smooth by people who came back for what they had left and by people who never did.

The messenger went back, took his step, and found a wall with a cart standing against it, one wheel mended with string. A woman sat on the shaft folding a letter she had written to her brother, twice, and had never once posted. She moved over to make room. He sat beside her. Neither of them spoke of what they carried, though he kept his hand over the royal seal in his coat as if it too had grown heavy.

When he came back to the barge at dusk, the ferrywoman asked whether the letter had reached the king. He said it had not been written for the king. She nodded, as though that was the answer she had expected, and poled him across without asking for the coin he had ready in his palm.
