A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The night porter at St Ebba's kept the keys to the basement, and the basement kept a jar. It stood on a shelf beside the boiler, a glass jar of clear spirit with a small grey heart floating in it, its chambers drawn fine as lace and its vessels trailing like wet thread. Nobody on the night shift knew who had put it there. Each new porter was shown it once and given one rule: do not lift the lid.

Tomas obeyed for eleven years, which was longer than most. Then came the winter the boiler failed and the wards went cold, and the matron came down in her dressing gown with a torch and said the old stories were nonsense. She lifted the lid herself. Nothing happened, except that the heart turned slowly in the spirit, as if it had heard its name, and somewhere above them a ward bell began to ring, long and patient, for a bed nobody had slept in for years.

"Go on up," the matron said, not looking at him. "Somebody's waiting for the warm." So Tomas carried the jar up four flights inside his coat, one hand under the glass, and found bed nine on the women's medical ward with its curtain drawn. An old woman lay there with her eyes open. He set the jar on the locker beside her. She smiled, said she had been waiting a long time for it to be found, and asked him to put the lid back on gently.

He stayed until the bell stopped. When the sky went grey over the car park he went back down, found the boiler running as if it had never been broken, and took a pencil from his top pocket. On the basement shelf he wrote his name on a strip of tape, stuck it to the lid, and added one line beneath it for whoever came next: lift it when someone asks.
