Three spotted puppies on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Three cartoon puppies sit in a row, each with dalmatian-style spots, drawn in thin black outline with small dot markings for eyes and spots. The tattoo is small and sits on the forearm against a red fabric background, with a gold chain and blue bead visible at the bottom of the frame. The linework is clean and even, and the image is in black and grey ink only.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third morning of your stay at Gull's Rest, you had learned that the three spotted pups belonged to nobody and to everybody. Mrs Hollis, who ran the boarding house on the cliff road, swore they had arrived on the milk cart in March and that she had never once opened the door to them. They were simply there each morning, sitting in a row on the bottom stair like guests waiting for a table.

The eldest, Biscuit, had a black patch over one eye that gave him the look of a retired pirate. The middle one never barked, only sneezed. The smallest, whom Mrs Hollis called Pudding, rolled down the hall whenever the front door opened, so the wind off the bay swept her along the carpet like a dropped glove. You tried to count their spots on the first day and gave up at forty.

On the Thursday, the kippers vanished from the breakfast plates, and every lodger blamed the lodger beside them. Mrs Hollis stood in the kitchen doorway with her arms folded and said nothing, which was worse. You followed a trail of silver scales out past the washing line and the coal bunker, and found the three of them lined up on the harbour wall, sitting straight as teacups, watching the boats come in with their tails going. Not one of them looked the least bit guilty.

You went back inside and reported the culprits. Mrs Hollis nodded slowly and reached for the teapot. The next morning there was an extra kipper on your plate, and three damp paw prints on the bottom stair, all of them leading to your door.
