Small star cluster tattoo on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests palm up on a floral fabric, showing a small tattoo of scattered dots and fine connecting lines on the inner wrist, resembling a star constellation. The marks are small, delicate and in black ink, with plenty of empty skin around them. The soft, even daylight and the muted pink and green floral background keep the focus on the tattoo.

The sky over the Scar was never kind to anyone who wanted to sleep, and Old Nan Pryce knew it better than the vicar. She kept a tin of wax-stubs under the lookout bench and a ledger of every cluster she had ever named, and when the boy Tobias came up the goat track with his boots full of river water, she did not ask why he had run. She only pointed at the ledger and told him to sit where the wind could not reach his ears.

"Seven small lights," she said, "the shepherds called them the Dropped Spoons, which tells you how little they cared for beauty. Find them and draw a line from one to the next, not straight, mind, the stars do not stand to attention. Then breathe and draw another." Tobias fumbled his stick of charcoal across the back of a tithe receipt. His lines wobbled. Nan laughed, a dry sound like a page turning.
"You want the whole thing in one go," she said. "That's your father in you. He sold the mill because he could not bear a slow sum."
He finished the drawing at the turn of the night, when the frost had crept into the castle's broken arch and the stars sat thin and sharp above the curtain wall. The lines looked like nothing much, a scatter of dots tied loosely together. Nan took the paper, held it to the moon, and grunted approval.
"Now you know where the lost ones go," she said, "not the heaven they preach about, just the place they can be found by someone looking up." Tobias pulled his collar high and went down the track before dawn, the drawing folded against his wrist beneath his sleeve.
