Small anchor tattoo on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a man's forearm, cropped at the shoulder and wrist, with a small anchor tattoo near the centre. The anchor is drawn in thin black linework with light shading on the shank and crossbar, and it has a simple ring at the top. The image is black and white, with a shallow depth of field that blurs the street background and keeps the tattoo in focus.

Mr Okafor from number nine says the Aldous went down the Thames on Tuesday with a new engine and a crew of four, and I thought of Dad's old anchor chain lying in the cupboard under the stairs, the one he swore was the heaviest thing he ever lifted sober.

I took it to the yard on Chapel Street, the one with the blue shutters. The man there, Tomasz, looked at the links and then at me and said nothing for a long time. He cleaned the rust off with a wire brush and oiled it, and when I asked him to put a small anchor on my arm he said he'd only do it if I promised not to tell him what it meant. I promised. He drew it freehand, quick and light, and the ring on top came out a little lopsided, which I have decided I like.
It is sore, and it is ugly in the way his hands were ugly. I keep pulling my sleeve up to check it in the window glass when I pass the Co-op. I have not decided yet whether I will tell Dad when he rings from the rig on Sunday. I suppose I will know by the time the chain is hung back up on the wall.
