At the reunion in the old Stanhope School hall, the talk turned as it always did to the chalk line. Nobody had drawn it in living memory, though the caretaker swore he scrubbed it off every spring, and every spring it came back: a row of small dots running from the coat pegs under the windows, ending in a point like an arrowhead aimed at the cracked back door.

Tom Pyke, who had left the village at seventeen and come back with a grey beard and no wife, said he would follow it. Nobody stopped him. The dots led across the playground, through the gap in the hawthorn, and down the lane where the milk cart used to wait. Behind him the music from the hall thinned to a hum, then to nothing, and he counted his steps the way the teachers had taught him, one dot, one breath.

At the end of the line, at the foot of the old water tower, stood a girl in a pinafore with a satchel. She did not look up. She held out a folded slate and said her name was Mercy Hale, and that she had been waiting since 1952 for someone to read what was written on it. Tom unfolded it. Inside, in careful chalk, was the name of every pupil who had ever walked the line home, and his own name was at the bottom with nothing written after it.

He took the chalk from his pocket, the same stub he had pinched from the classroom drawer as a boy, and began a new dot beside the last. When he looked up the girl was gone. Back at the hall the reunion was still going, and nobody had noticed he had left. The line on the floor now ran all the way to the door, and its arrowhead pointed at him.
