Small arrow tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black arrow with a short crossing stroke sits on the side of a finger, held between two hands in a close view. The linework is thin and solid with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone. The background is pale skin and blurred hands, with the tattoo placed near the centre of the frame.

The tide tables said we had until four, and Uncle Walt had never once been wrong about the water, only about the weather. I held the stake steady while he drove it into the mud at the edge of Hollow Creek, the mallet's flat ring carrying out over the marsh like a bell nobody wanted to answer.

Every stake got an arrow, a single black stroke with a short crossbar at its tail, burned in with the hot iron he kept in a biscuit tin. The arrows told the carters which way the causeway ran beneath the water. Walt said a man could walk a drowned road if he trusted the points and never looked down at his boots.
That spring the stakes kept going missing. Walt blamed the samphire pickers, then the gulls, then his own memory. I found the last one three hundred yards out, its arrow pointing not along the causeway but straight at the Dunmere farmhouse, its roof a grey hump above the reeds. Someone had turned it on purpose.
We went out at dusk with a paraffin lantern. The farmhouse door was swollen shut, so we went in through the scullery window, and on the windowsill lay a fresh stake with its arrow burned clean, and beneath it a farthing pressed into the wood. Walt looked at it a long time, then pulled the stake free and handed it to me. 'Reckon she wanted us to come the long way round,' he said, and we did.
