Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black outline of an open umbrella with a curved handle sits on the side of the middle finger of a hand. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is rendered in solid black ink. The photograph is black and white, shot close up against a dark background, with the fingers and knuckles filling the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass umbrella stand by the front door of Seacrest House holds eleven umbrellas, and none of them belong to anyone still staying there. You count them on your first morning, because counting is what you do when the rain has been falling since Tuesday and the lounge smells of wet wool and Mrs Pargeter's lavender polish.

Mrs Pargeter keeps a ledger of lost property in a green book with a broken spine. Every item goes in with a date and a guest's name, and nothing is ever claimed. 'They come back for the hats,' she says, 'never the brollies.' You ask about the black one with the curled handle and a bent spoke, and she taps the page and tells you a commercial traveller left it in 1961 and promised to fetch it in spring.

You take the job at the desk for the summer, pinning up tide tables and sorting the post. On the last wet afternoon you find a pencil sketch tucked into the back cover of the ledger, a small open umbrella drawn with a steady hand and signed with initials and a date from the week you arrived. You don't recognise the writing, but you know the shape, the way the ribs fan out and the handle hooks like a question mark.

On Friday the rain stops for the first time in nine days. You go to fetch the sketch to show Mrs Pargeter and find the stand empty except for the one black umbrella, standing open on the flagstones to dry. You fold the drawing inside it, handle up, the way you were taught to leave a thing you mean to come back for.
