Anchor, heart and cross on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo on the side of a finger shows a black anchor with a heart sitting on its shank and a cross above it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is filled with solid black ink. The photo is taken close up against a dark background, with a hand and a red fabric edge visible at the edges of the frame.

You are standing under the cold lamp at Saltmarsh Steps at ten past two, because your grandmother always said the tide turns at the hour nobody wants it to, and you have never once managed to tell her she was wrong about anything. The river is black and quick. Across it the cranes at Hollin Wharf blink red at nobody.

Your brother's boat is due in on the morning flood. In your coat pocket is the thin wire cross he left on the kitchen table the week he went, and you have a biro you keep clicking while you wait. You draw on the back of your hand the way he used to draw on his knuckles during long watches: the anchor first, then the little heart sitting on its shank, then the crossbar above, every line so fine it barely takes on the skin.

A taxi slows, sees you, and rolls on. A gull walks the rail like a clerk checking a rota. You think about the night he told you the anchor was not for holding on but for remembering where the bottom was. You thought it was daft at the time, and you told him so, and he laughed until he had to sit down on the step.

At quarter to five the lights of the trawler come round the bend, slow as a held breath. You do not wave. You lift your hand instead, the ink dark under the sodium glow, and let the light catch it. Somewhere on that deck someone sees the mark and knows the way home.
