Heart and key tattoos on clasped fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together with fingers interlaced. A small black outline heart with a keyhole shape sits on one finger, and a thin black key sits on the other hand's finger. The linework is delicate and even, the ink is solid black on pale skin, and the dark background keeps the focus on the tattoos.

Mabel Ransome kept her keys on a loop of greasy twine, and by the spring of 1962 there were eleven of them, none of which opened anything she owned. Her husband Walt had cut every one at the forge behind the lock-up on Canal Street, and when he died she found she could not throw any of them away.

The lad who came to sweep the forge that summer was called Tobias Quayle, nineteen and all elbows, and he watched her turn the twine over and over in her palm. "That one's a bit of a puzzle," he said, nodding at a small brass key with a notch filed the wrong way. "Walt made that the week you two married. He told me once it opened nothing on purpose."
Tobias spent three evenings with a file and a candle stub. On the fourth he brought her a heart of soft lead, moulded around the notched key, with a keyhole cut into its centre so the two fitted only when held together. "It isn't a lock," he said, turning it so the light came through. "It's a promise you have to hold up to the window."
Mabel laughed until she coughed, then slid the brass key into the hollow of the heart. Outside, the barge horn sounded at the lock gate, and she pressed her thumb over his to close the gap, and the notch clicked home like an old door agreeing to open.
