Small arrow tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black arrow tattoo sits on the side of an ankle, with feathered fletching at the tail and a fine shaft running towards a simple arrowhead. The linework is thin and solid, with little shading. The ink is dark grey-black against light skin, and the foot and grey trousers fill the frame against a grey and beige floor.

The wolf had taken four lambs before the frost came hard, and by the time the snow reached the top gate the whole farm smelled of wet wool and fear. Old Tam Renwick sat by the range with a bundle of grey goose feathers in his lap and a shaft of ash across his knees. 'Fletch it straight,' his daughter said from the doorway, 'or it will go where it likes.'

He cut the feathers the way his father had, a finger's width from the quill, and bound them with waxed thread so the vanes lay flat as a fallen rake. He had smoothed the shaft through three winters. He fitted a narrow iron head and sat with it until the fire had burned down to a red thread, and then he went out into the white field with the bow.

The wolf was waiting at the edge of the wood, grey on grey, watching the byre as if it had been asked to. Tam drew. The string sang. The arrow went through the thin light and struck the frozen stone wall a yard to the left of anything living, and the wolf turned its head once and loped into the trees without hurry.

He came back cold and said nothing. In March, when the thaw ran brown down the lane, Mabel found the arrow lying in the verge with its feathers still tight and dry, as though the snow had been kept from it. She carried it in and hung it over the door, and on the nights the lambs stayed quiet she would look up at it and think of the wolf going home.
