Ottilie Vane counted the feed sacks for the third time that morning, as if the number might change if she looked away. Forty-one, down from ninety in August. Thomas Reade, the ringmaster, wanted them sold to a fancier in Boston. He said it kindly, leaning on the ticket booth with his hat in his hands. Ottilie told him the birds were not for sale and that she would sooner sell the wagons. He nodded at the wagons, which had no wheels left worth mentioning, and said nothing more.
On the last night of the season she opened the loft door and did not clap or call. The crowd was thin, a few families and a man with a dog. She simply lifted the lid of the cage. Castor went first, a black shape against the lamps, wings wide, then Pollux beside him, the two of them tilting over the empty benches as if they had rehearsed it for years.
They did not come down. Ottilie stood in the sawdust until the lamps were turned off one by one, then walked out to the field where the sacks were stacked. Above the hedge two dark marks crossed the last of the light, one a little higher than the other, and then the dusk took them.
