Small arrow tattoo on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a brown sofa with the jeans cuff rolled up at the ankle. A small black arrow sits on the outer side of the ankle, drawn with thin, simple linework and solid black ink. The image is a casual, natural-light snapshot with the tattoo as the clear focal point, and there is no colour beyond the dark ink.

The first hard frost came to Hollin Farm on the feast of St Brice, and the old shepherd Abel Greave went out before light with a bow across his back and a quiver of ash arrows he had cut the summer before. His granddaughter Nell followed with a lantern she was not allowed to carry. At the stile he stopped, nocked a single arrow and loosed it into the grey air. It rose thin and hissed away over the wall. 'Where's that gone?' she asked. 'Where it will be found,' he said, and they walked on, following the shaft's line in the snow where its fletching caught the lantern light and dropped. Each time the trail went cold, he shot again.
By noon they had found eleven ewes huddled in the lee of a boulder, and the twelfth at the bottom of a drift, bleating. Nell gathered the arrows as they went back down, pulling them from fence posts and thorn. Seven were still whole. The others had split on the stone, and she kept those in her coat pocket, because her grandfather said a broken arrow was still a road home.
That night she sat by the range filing the bent heads smooth while Abel watched from his chair. 'You'll be doing this when I'm gone,' he said. She did not answer. She blew the filings off the steel and hung the best arrow on the hook above the door, its point aimed down the valley towards the lane and the lights of the town beyond it.
