Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A single small word, Run, is tattooed on the outer side of an ankle, just above the heel. The lettering is set in a serif typeface and drawn in a single dark grey ink against pale skin. The foot rests on a dark slate surface, with black fabric covering the heel and lower leg.

The bailiffs were due at the gate by six, and Dolly Marr still had the candy floss machine to strip before the lorries came. The council man, all clipboard and cheap aftershave, had been hanging about the dodgems for an hour, pretending he wasn't counting the chairs as they went into the van.

It was Harold's sign that stopped me. Harold had lettered every name on this fair for forty years, the gondolas, the ghost train, the Wheel, and when his hands gave out he sat in the caravan with a brush he could no longer hold and told me the lettering would outlive us all. His last job was the small board over the ticket hatch. Plain serif, dark grey on cream, one word: Run. I'd always taken it for a joke aimed at the kids. Then on Tuesday night I found a second pot of paint under his bunk, and the same word stencilled faint on the inside of the wagon door, like a bruise that had gone yellow.

I unhooked the board myself and carried it across the car park to the lorry. The boy from the council followed, holding out the brush as though it were a receipt. Paint over it, love, I told him. He didn't. He turned it over in his hands, read it, then looked back at the field where the Wheel was folding in on itself like a closing fan.

The lorry pulled out at quarter past five, the board lashed flat in the back. In the wing mirror, the letters read the wrong way round, which is how Harold always painted them so the riders could make them out from the top of the Wheel. Even turned around, the word kept its meaning all the way to the motorway.
