Small mountain range on the inner wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a mountain range with a snow-capped peak and a darker shaded ridge sits on the inner wrist. The linework is fine and the shading is soft, using black ink and grey tones. The clenched fist is raised in the upper part of the frame, with a wooden floor filling the background.

Her sister lived on the far side of that ridge, in a village where the church bell still rang in the old hours. The road round the valley had been shut since the year the river took the bridge, so once a season we went over the top the way the goats did, with a rope between us and a flask of plum brandy that she insisted was for the frontier guard.

The guard was waiting at the stone with a torch and a clipboard that was not quite frozen. He asked what we were carrying. Ilse unbuttoned her coat and took out a folded sheet of tracing paper, the outline of the range drawn in pencil, every ridge traced twice, once from her side and once from ours, the shadows darker where the rock turned away from the sun.

He looked at it for a long time. Then he handed back her passport without stamping it, and said the snow on that mountain was the only thing up there that had never needed a visa. Ilse laughed until she coughed, and we went down the far slope with the light coming up behind us, the white peak turning pink while the dark ridge still held the night.
