Small mountain range on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised fist shows a small tattoo of a mountain range on the inner wrist. The peaks are drawn in thin black linework with soft, sketchy shading on their shadow sides. The ink is black on a light skin tone, set against a dark wooden panel that makes the design stand out.

The ridge had no name on any chart the survey team carried, only a grid reference Odile had copied off a wall in the habitat's old archive. Below them the valley lay flat and silver with lichen, and the air tasted of iron and cold stone. Teodor set the theodolite on its tripod and squinted through it at the far peaks, three of them in a ragged line, their shadow sides hatched dark where the afternoon light gave up.

"They're not on the drone survey," he said. "The model has the plateau as flat."

"The model was made by people who never came up here." Odile crouched and brushed grit from a boulder, revealing a scratched outline she had half expected: a jagged line, a second peak leaning against the first. Someone had cut the same range into this rock long before the colony had a name for itself, or perhaps long after the old world had forgotten its own mountains.

They spent the light measuring. Teodor wrote figures in a notebook with a pencil he kept sharp using the blade his grandmother had left him. Odile sketched the profile in fine strokes, pressing lightly on the shadows so they would not smudge when the wind picked up.

When the sun slipped behind the highest summit, the three peaks turned to ink against a pale sky. Teodor looked at the drawing, then at the stone, and laughed. "We're not surveying it," he said. "We're just the next people to find it."
