Arrow tattoo on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small arrow runs diagonally along the inner forearm near the wrist, with a stacked triangular arrowhead at the top and feathered fletching at the base. The lines are fine and dark, with the fletching built up from hatched and stippled strokes. The image is in black ink on pale skin against a textured knitted sleeve, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Owen,

The wheel at Shaw Pit stopped again on Tuesday, so there has been time for the thing you asked me to make. I have sent it in the tin with the broken clasp, so mind your fingers on the edge. The shaft is ash from the hedge behind Mam's, straight as anything I could find, and it took me two evenings to get the point right.
The head is three tin triangles, cut from the lamp-room tin Mr Pryce threw out, stacked one above the other and bent to sit on the shaft. I hammered the points flat so they would not catch on your coat. The fletching was the hard part. Dad's pigeons moulted in March and I saved every grey feather that came off the loft floor. I split each quill, then stippled the vanes with the tip of a darning needle dipped in soot and vinegar, a dot here and a line there, until the whole thing looked like frost on a kitchen window.
I did not mean it to be sad, but the boys were talking at the chapel gate about you going down the Harrow shaft on Monday, and I wanted something you could keep in your pocket that pointed the right way. If the cage comes up slow, count the three triangles. Each one is a week of letters. Write back and tell me which way it is facing.
Love, Nell
