Grey geometric tattoo on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman is photographed from behind, wearing a pale blue open-back camisole and dark jeans against a textured grey wall. A small grey tattoo of overlapping triangular shapes sits on the upper arm, shaded in soft black and grey tones. A second small dark tattoo is visible near the wrist of the other arm, where her hand rests on her hip.

The tide tables are pinned to the wheelhouse door with a bent nail, and you have already corrected the lock time twice in pencil. Down on the Ouse the barge Marigold noses against the lock gates, her hold empty but for a stack of slate offcuts lashed under a tarpaulin. Your uncle Tomasz swore slate was the only cargo that never shifted, and he was right about that, if nothing else.

Three slates make a pyramid when you stand them on their long edges and lean them in. Tomasz taught you that trick on the cabin step, the way he taught the gulls to take crusts from your palm, patient and a bit cheating. Each stone props the next, so the whole thing holds up on nothing but angles. He called it the only honest knot he ever learned, because the more weight you pile on, the tighter it grips.
The lock keeper shouts that you are holding up the Thursday timber. You ignore him and build one more pile on the cabin roof, three slates with a fourth tilted across them like a lean-to. When the sun drops low over the sluice, the shadows of the slates lie across the water in grey stripes, sharp as ink. You watch them drift past the bow and think Tomasz would have called it a good day's work, and you let the pencil roll off the step where it falls.
