Bicycle outline on a thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a bicycle with a diamond frame and two wheels sits on the front of a thigh, above the knee. The linework is thin and even, with a slight doubled edge on the wheels and frame. The ink is a single dark tone with no colour, and the bare skin and plain background keep the focus on the design.

Dear Tom,

The pass shut on Tuesday and the landlord says it will be March before the lorries get over it, so I am writing this on the back of the breakfast menu because the ink in my pen has frozen twice. Mrs Hale keeps the fire going in the snug and charges us nothing for the bread, which I think is her way of apologising for the bedrooms. Your bicycle is still in the barn where you left it. I went out with a torch this morning to check the chain, found the frame furred with frost, and stood there longer than I needed to.
I had never noticed that the wheels have a second ring drawn just inside the first, as though the rim had been traced twice by someone who wanted it to look like it was moving. Dad did that with his pencil on the back of the shed door, do you remember? Mrs Hale says the inn's old handyman used to ink the outline of every cycle the guests brought in, and that the shop in Kendal stopped doing it once everyone wanted plastic. There is a name scratched under the saddle that I can't make out in this light. I have decided it is yours, from before you were born, and I will not be told otherwise.
When the thaw comes I will wheel it down the valley road myself, with the snow still grey along the verges, and I will be the first to leave tracks in it. You will have to buy me a coffee at the bottom. Don't argue.
