Small bicycle tattoo on the upper chest
Fine line · Chest · Mixed · Photo
A small tattoo of a bicycle sits on the upper chest near the collarbone. It is drawn with thin black linework for the wheels and outline, with the frame picked out in red. The image is a close crop with soft natural light, and the red jacket and white top frame the tattoo against the skin.

Nobody in the valley knew what it meant. Wren Ashdown, who swept the shavings each evening, assumed it was about bent spokes.

Three days before the spring fair, the old king's courier arrived on foot, pushing a wheel that had split down the rim. He had ridden it through the mountain passes, and now nobody could say whether the frame beneath it could be saved. Wren took the wheel from his hands and turned it slowly, watching the lamplight run through the cracked hoop like water through a sieve.
She worked through the night. She drew the fine black lines of the new rim on the oak bench with a stub of charcoal, then traced the frame in madder paint, the only red her mother had ever trusted on a saddle because it did not flake. By dawn the wheel ran true. The courier tested it on the cobbles and laughed like a boy let off school.
When the king's men came for the bicycle at noon, they found it leaning against the wall with a small red heart smudged into the crossbar where the paint had run. Wren had not meant it. Standing there with charcoal on her fingers, she decided it was the truest thing she had made.
