Small black angular symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A hand with several silver rings rests on a knitted pale blue jumper, with long hair visible at the edge of the frame. A small black tattoo of an angular symbol, built from a cross and a diamond-like outline, sits on the wrist. The thin, crisp linework is set against the skin in a close, centred composition with soft natural light.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The mark had to be cut before the rain, because wet clay takes a point badly and the overseer hated a blurred seal. I had three jars of barley oil waiting on the wall and a boy named Tobin who kept dropping the stylus. So I pressed the cross first, two strokes that met at the middle, then the diamond around it, tight as a fishing net.

Every jar at Corran Dun carried that sign, and every jar was counted twice: once by the miller who owed the grain, once by the woman in the dark store who knew how many had gone out. The cross meant the granary, the diamond meant the wall that kept it. My father had cut it for thirty years and I had watched his hand so often I could draw it asleep. He never told me what the lines were for beyond the stores. He said a mark is a promise made by someone who will not be there to keep it.

When the stranger came in the autumn with a wagon of salt and a cough, he asked to see the seal. I did not want to show him. He turned the jar over, ran his thumb across the diamond, and laughed quietly, as if I had told him a joke I had forgotten. "This is my father's mark," he said. "He cut it on a wall two valleys east, before the wall fell in."

I kept the stylus. I kept the salt too, and two jars more than was fair, and I did not tell the overseer why. Some promises are made to people who are already gone, and the clay holds them just as well.
