Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A large triangle on the abdomen is filled with several rose blooms shown in detailed outline and shading. The roses overlap and fill the triangle edge to edge, with the petals drawn in fine lines and stippled shading. The tattoo is in black and grey on pale skin, with a grey top and hands at the edges of the frame.

The three parishes could never agree where their land met, so they sent for Mrs Ada Fenn, who kept bees and knew the hedges better than the men who had planted them. She walked the boundary with a ball of red thread and a sack of rose cuttings, and at every corner she knelt and pushed a stem into the cold ground.

Harvest came, and the parish clerks found the triangle filled edge to edge with blooms, so thick that no bailiff could step through without tearing his coat. Each rose had been drawn in with fine lines of shadow, petal over petal, until the field looked less like grass than like a page of ink. The men argued over whose it was. Ada said nothing and sold honey.
The turn came with the first frost. The clerks went out to measure and found the roses had grown in a closed ring, and the boundary stones had sunk into the middle where no one had set them. Nobody could say which parish owned the flowers, only that the thorns kept everyone honest about where they stepped.
Ada's grandson still keeps bees on that corner. He says the roses open on the first of June whether anyone prunes them or not, and that the clerk who measured it once wrote to the county to say the land was fully occupied.
