Realistic rose on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Colour · Photo

A large rose, seen from above, fills most of the back of the hand, with layered petals in pink and magenta. Soft shading and highlights give the petals a lifelike, three-dimensional look, while blue-grey tones fade into the skin around the edges. The fingers and a grey-painted nail are visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told the damask rose would not survive a Fenland winter, so he planted it anyway against the south wall of the infirmary garden, where the old bricks held the day's heat until well past compline.

It bloomed in June, late and heavy. The outer petals were the colour of wine left too long in the sun, and the inner ones were paler and pinker, as though someone had breathed on them and the breath had stayed. Brother Oswin, who kept the almonry accounts and distrusted anything that did not earn its keep, came out with his ledger tucked under his arm to complain that the petals were drifting onto the thyme and the sage. Anselm said nothing. He was watching the blue-grey shadow that gathered at the rim of each bloom as the light went, the colour of the Ouse at dusk, creeping inward from the edges as if the flower were slowly sinking into the evening.

He cut the best bloom at vespers and carried it to the refectory, where Abbot Gilbert turned it over in his fingers and said that roses were a poor investment and a good sermon, and that he had never been able to tell the two apart. The abbot ordered the root left alone through the winter, and sacking tied round the stems against the frost.

Oswin kept one petal. He pressed it flat between the pages of the almonry ledger, meaning to be rid of it by Michaelmas. The following year the sums came out wrong by a few pence, and nobody could find the error, and the ledger still smelled faintly of roses when the new man opened it.
