Mind the step, and don't let that tea go cold, the 4.10 is late again and we've got the length of a kettle to wait. Forty years I've watched this platform, and the best thing that ever happened on it was a girl called Maud Pellow selling pies from a tray the size of a cartwheel.

Maud had a crown. Not a real one, mind. She cut it from a sheet of black card the day old Corrigan, the stationmaster, said her tray blocked the gangway and he'd have it sent to the goods yard. She made the crown five points, one for each pie she'd sold before breakfast, pinned it behind her ear with a hatpin, and wore it every morning after that, daring him.
Corrigan never did move her tray. He tried once, on a wet Monday, and a gust took his hat clean onto the rails. Maud caught it with one hand, pie still in the other, brushed it off, and set it back on his head. She said, very polite, that a king ought to look after his subjects. The porters laughed for a week.
Now here's the bit I like. When Maud's card went soft in the rain, she never threw it away. She traced its outline in lamp black on the signal box door, and it's still there, five little points above the hook where the signalman hangs his coat. Go and look when the train's gone. Nobody's ever had the heart to rub it out.
