The heap above Harrowgate has grown nothing in forty years, so when a single pink bloom pushes through the grit in March, your mother calls it a sign and your father calls it a trick of the frost. You are nine, and you believe your mother. Each morning you carry a jam jar of water up the cinder path, past the headgear with its rusted wheel, and tip it over the red shale at the root.

Your uncle Tom works the lower seam and comes up each evening grey to the elbows, smelling of wet stone and paraffin. One Thursday he empties his pockets on the kitchen table and a clear stone rolls out, cut to a hard little point, that he swears was not there at the start of the shift. Nobody believes him, and nobody wants to be the one to say so. Your father weighs it in his palm and says the strike fund could eat for a month on that.

That night you wait until the house is asleep, then climb the heap in your boots. The bloom is wider than it was, its petals pale as the inside of a shell, its centre dark with the grit you have been watering. You kneel, press the stone into the middle of the flower, and pack the shale round it with both hands until only its shine shows through.

In the morning the table is bare and nobody asks where the stone went. Your father stands at the window with his cup going cold, looking up at the slope. The headgear wheel is still, and above it the flower has opened wider, holding a light you did not put there.
