Small elephant tattoo behind the ear

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of an elephant with its trunk raised sits on the skin behind the ear. The linework is a single consistent black line with no shading, and the drawing is set against a neutral, softly lit background. The ear is pierced with several silver studs, and the tattoo is the main subject of the composition.

Brother Anselm sets the inkpot down by your elbow without looking at it, the way he has set down a hundred inkpots, and tells you the abbot wants the Tuesday psalter finished before the thaw. You have ruled the margins twice already. The vellum smells of lime and the stove in the corner has gone out again, so your fingers are stiff around the quill.

In the margin of folio nine someone long dead drew a beast nobody at the house has seen. Its trunk curls up like a question. Old Brother Osric, who kept the bees, said it came from a Crusader's stories, and Brother Anselm said it came from a drunk's dream, and both of them were probably right. You are told to copy it exactly, in one unbroken stroke, lifting the pen only once for the ear. The rule is older than the abbey: a line that leaves the paper twice is a line that will be remembered as two lies.

So you do it slowly. The ink runs thin at the curve of the back, then thick at the foot where the pen rested. The trunk rises and you hold your breath as though the animal might lift its head and look at you. When you finally raise the nib, the little creature stands alone on the page, trunk lifted toward a bell that isn't there.

Brother Anselm leans over your shoulder, looks for a long moment, and says nothing. Then he takes the quill and, in the bottom corner, writes your name beside the beast, small enough that only someone searching would find it.
